Deep Valley Drifters with George Segebade calling

Saturday, October 21 at The Guilford Grange in Greensboro, we once again welcome the multi-talented Deep Valley Drifters along with George Segebade calling!  At least half of them.  I’ve just been informed that Ted Ehrhard will not be able to play but instead we’ll have Bill Hicks who was the featured fiddler of the Red Clay Ramblers for many years!   It will be great to have a great fiddler from that famous band!

Maria Fairchild gets the piano rockin’ and also plays banjo  making it another dancer pleasing evening to enjoy with your friends at the Grange dance. The only other thing needed to make it a great evening is you!

George Segebade calls throughout the region as well as books the bands for our local dance and annual Feet Retreat dance weekend! “Mr. Feet Retreat” will make the evening fun with the many dances he has collected over the years. SPECIAL! Blazer & Spero with Andrea Nettleton

Now the big reveal about some of our best out of state talent of the year!! This is a special event you don’t want to miss!

On October 10 at Clemmons Civic Club we will have the privilege of hosting “Blazer & Spero”, a collaboration of two amazing musicians from two well known and in demand bands, The Synchopaths and Lift Ticket!

Jeff Spero writes dances and is a musician in The Syncopaths, probably the foremost contra band on the West Coast. They have played SDR and Gypsy Meltdown in recent years.

People who regularly go to dance weekends know Rex Blazer who was the fiddler for Lift Ticket when they were the featured band at Feet Retreat about 10 years ago, and he has played at numerous festivals for years. Lift Ticket was one of the featured bands at Warren and Terry Doyle’s sold out Contradance Winter Holiday event in December of 2016, and they were very well received!

And to top off this very special evening we have one of the region’s well known and experienced callers, Andrea Nettleton of Atlanta, who has called our dance at least twice in recent years and called at Splashdance 2016.

Please help support this special event and high quality talent by making an extra donation this time if you can. A suggested regular admission to this dance of $10 and full time students at $6 will help defray the extra costs. And, be sure to let your friends and others know about this event so they can enjoy it with you!. Your first time dancer guests will be admitted FREE! Thanks!

Reel Shady with Dean Snipes calling

If you missed going to Feet Retreat for any reason, you’ll be glad to at last get back on the dance floor this Tuesday, September 19 at the Clemmons Civic Club, the place of friendly dancers!  And if you enjoyed Feet Retreat but are now coming off the high, re-energize here at your local dance where new people need you to help them get started and where the dancing is always fun and often hilarious.

We’ll thrill to the sounds of the well known regional band, Reel Shady as they provide their own energetic interpretation of Scottish, Celtic and traditional tunes!  Reel Shady has been providing listeners with this finely detailed, tight sound at venues in the area’s venues for many years, adding fresh new interpretations at each dance!  They blend their many talents, experience and instruments in a way that makes dancing to the music easy and fun.

Also, to add to the evening’s fun, is a caller we all love, Dean Snipes, the original “mighty fine” caller who engages us with his humor and wit as he clearly teaches the lesson and calls the dances. Spontaneous hilarity breaks out at times as Dean corrals we  sometimes inattentive dancers as we socialize and talk. It is humorous when we accidentally mess up during the dance and Dean has to get us back in line. That’s why contra is some much fun – its something we can do and not have to worry about doing right, enjoying  the freedom to make mistakes, knowing that no one cares!

Camp Millstone is a well-maintained 4-H Camp in the Sandhills region of North Carolina, near the town of Ellerbe, between Pinehurst and Rockingham. It is ideal for a high-energy dance weekend, situated on 320 acres with 14 spacious cabins and lots of room for tent campers. Much of the camp property is wooded, deciduous and long-leaf pine, with a picturesque lake right in the middle. There is a quite large dining hall adjoining a professional kitchen, perfect for community meals. As many of you recall, we happily danced at Camp Sertoma near Winston-Salem for many years, but the state closed that camp in 2013 so we have relocated to Millstone, a top notch facility run by the same director who ran Sertoma for many years. We are very excited to have the opportunity to dance in this excellent facility, and we think you will share our excitement.
in the lovely Sandhills region of North Carolina.

Come out and enjoy it with us, you’ll be glad you did!

Eileen Regan, Julie Gorka with Emily Abel calling

DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL – this dance will be held at CLEMMONS CIVIC CLUB (instead of Salem College).  If driving a distance to dance, its always a good idea to check for any last minute changes! Yes?
The same  Salem faculty and student discounts will still apply so come on out and dance!
Salem College Contra Collaborators
kicks off the fall season appropriately with an all woman team beginning with a Salem Alumna, Emily Abel,  calling the dances, but remember, the dance will be held at Clemmons Civic Club.

Emily fell in love with contra dancing while a student at Salem. After attending many dances and going to a few fabulous dance weekends like our own FEET RETREAT,  she was drawn to the art of calling dances, that is, teaching each dance and calling out the moves as people walked patterns to the music. Since graduating she has traveled extensively, calling dances all up and down the east coast while enjoyed the fellowship of other callers, band members and all the many people who just love contra dancing.

At this dance we have two amazing players playing live, high energy music: Eileen Reagan of Big Celtic Fun band and Julie Gorka of Copious Notes!   Big Celtic Fun has played for contra dances and festivals and all kinds of private events, and features driving traditional instrumentals featuring Eileen’s fiddle playing.

Next is Julie Gorka, a musician with a wide range of musical interests. She plays with many local musicians in the Triangle area and in the Washington DC area, including Copious Notes (with Mara Shea).  Julie has a degree in piano performance and will be playing keyboard at this dance. So, expect some great music to contra dance by!

Anyone can contra dance. No partner necessary, no experience necessary. New people join in all the time. We all work together and help one another out as we have fun and try new things.

Salem students and faculty are privileged to get into the dance for only  $3 !
Regular admission is now $9 while other students 23 and under come in for $6
Members enjoy a discounted admission of $8 and member students $5

ICE CREAME SOCIAL 6:30 -Tune Rider-Dean Snipes Calling

First a word from our sponsor: “Note the new rates below which began in July”

Ice Cream Social!! Our 3rd and final dance in August will be the delicious annual tradition of the summer Grange dances!

We will converge on the Guilford Grange at Greensboro with ice chests and ice cream makers full of our favorite cool cow confections at 6:30pm to enjoy together. Obviously we all don’t need to bring some in order to have plenty but if you’d like to, please do. A few toppings you bring will crown our efforts with tasty additions.

This is a great time to bring guests who have never danced at any of our dances before or, maybe have never even contra danced at all, because they can get into this particular dance for FREE! The Treasurer said so and I believe him!

After an hour of fine fellowship over frozen food we’ll find ourselves on the floor doing the beginners lesson at 7:30. At 8 everyone will find random partners and begin dancing to the music of the fantastic band, Tunerider! These two expert contra dance musicians have got some really great tune sets that will propel us into dancing paradise!

Having the well known “mighty fine” dance caller, Dean Snipes, from the Charlotte area up to teach and call each dance from his collection, with style and humor, will make the evening even more special and enjoyable! Yep going to be a mighty fine evening all around!

School Construction and PARKING
