Salem College, Gretchen Caverly, Larry Unger, Caller Bree Kalb

What an incredible dance evening! We are pleased to have Larry Unger and Gretchen Caverly for our musical entertainment!

Larry Unger has been a full-time musician since 1984 and has presented a diverse range of musical performances across the United States, Europe, and Scandinavia. Titled “master guitarist” by Dirty Linen, Unger has played with many top contra dance bands and has accompanied such fiddlers as Judy Hyman, Matt Glaser, and Lissa Schneckenburger. Larry’s original waltzes and fiddle tunes have been played and recorded by musicians around the world and can also be heard in the Ken Burns documentary, Our National Parks. Initially studying blues guitar with Etta Baker and John Jackson and later taking up the banjo and bass, Unger has become one of the most sought-after rhythm players in the country. He has a great breadth of understanding of traditional music to complement his considerable technical proficiency and enjoys telling stories about the origins of his music and the people who taught him.

Gretchen Caverly’s fiddle playing will carry you away with her precise yet freely interpreted melodies.

Our Caller will be Bree Kalb.

Salem College Contra Collaborators
kicks off the fall season appropriately with an all woman team beginning with a Salem Alumna, Emily Abel,  calling the dances, but remember, the dance will be held at Clemmons Civic Club.

Emily fell in love with contra dancing while a student at Salem. After attending many dances and going to a few fabulous dance weekends like our own FEET RETREAT,  she was drawn to the art of calling dances, that is, teaching each dance and calling out the moves as people walked patterns to the music. Since graduating she has traveled extensively, calling dances all up and down the east coast while enjoyed the fellowship of other callers, band members and all the many people who just love contra dancing.

At this dance we have two amazing players playing live, high energy music: Eileen Reagan of Big Celtic Fun band and Julie Gorka of Copious Notes!   Big Celtic Fun has played for contra dances and festivals and all kinds of private events, and features driving traditional instrumentals featuring Eileen’s fiddle playing.

Next is Julie Gorka, a musician with a wide range of musical interests. She plays with many local musicians in the Triangle area and in the Washington DC area, including Copious Notes (with Mara Shea).  Julie has a degree in piano performance and will be playing keyboard at this dance. So, expect some great music to contra dance by!

Anyone can contra dance. No partner necessary, no experience necessary. New people join in all the time. We all work together and help one another out as we have fun and try new things.
