At Clemmons – The Stuff with Cynthia Stewart calling

On November 21 at Clemmons “The Stuff” is back to bring us more great dancing music. Great stuff!

Gretchen Caverly’s fiddle playing will carry you away with her precise yet freely interpreted melodies. Nic Coker works the guitar, supporting the melody with his creative and fluid rhythm and bass lines. In other words – music that is great fun to dance to!

Our local caller, Cynthia Stewart, who is a long time dancer and been involved in our organization for many years brings her love of contra dance to us through a fun repetoire of dances she enjoys that will make this a fun evening!.

No partner necessary because you will dance with everyone in the room. 🙂
No experience necessary because this is:
– just for fun
– walking a pattern
– you’re told what to do ahead of time and as you dance
– other friendly people who have danced at least a few times will guide you when you need it 🙂

If you’re new though, you’ll probably have more fun if you attend the short lesson at 7:30 just before the dance.

Dancing starts at 8 and runs until 10:30 with a short break in the middle. Clean, soft soled shoes are best for the floor.

General admission $9 (members $8)
Full time students (under 24) $6. (members $5)

At Greensboro Grange – Starfront Property with Nick Boulet calling

Saturday, November 18 at the Greensboro Grange we are happy to be able to present an experienced band that has been energizing dancers wherever they go!

Starfront Property is a four-piece string band that plays a variety of styles of dance music from Old Time to a newer repertoire of contradance tunes, including several original tunes. While steeped in the Old Time tradition, they have the flexibility of playing across a wide range of styles. From a whisper to a growl, Starfront Property will keep dancers movin’ and groovin’ all night long.

Matt Livingston (mandolin) and Joel Keebler (bass) played together in Dot Dot Dash for over 10 years before Joel relocated to Portland, OR in 2013. He recently returned to the Appalachians and is currently living in Blacksburg. Jason (guitar, banjo) and Gina Dilg (fiddle) are a husband and wife duo that recently moved east from Colorado to Christiansburg, VA.

Nick Boulet, an excellent caller, who happens to also be president of our Fiddle & Bow Country Dancers group, will be with us to teach and call the dances, making sure everyone gets off to a great start. He makes the dances easy to understand and has a lot of fun doing this.

Parking should be OK now!

We eagerly anticipate dancing to the music of this four piece band on Tuesday, November 14 at Clemmons when we welcome back the High Country Rollers!

Let me introduce the band:

Kilby Spencer is from Crumpler NC and has been playing old-time music on fiddle for most of his life.
Kelley Breiding, a NC native an award-winning banjo player, propels the band’s sound with her rhythmic clawhammer style banjo.
Rick Davidson, from Lewisville NC, is a multi-instrumental award-winning string band musician.
Joanne Davidson, from Lewisville NC, is an accomplished upright bass and guitar player.

Someone who is familiar to us will come from the Charlotte area and that is, none other than the original “Mighty Fine” caller, Dean Snipes!. We love him and enjoy his firm but thorough walk-throughs and witty sense of humor as he calls.

Special!-Friday Dance at YMCA (must RSVP) – The Ones Improper, Nick Boulet

We, together with the YMCA are sponsoring a FREE dance on Friday, November 3rd from 7pm until 9pm but you MUST RSVP to attend.  I suggest you get there at 6:45 in order to change shoes, get oriented and check in.

Besides being FREE and conveniently in Winston-Salem and on a Friday night, it will be a lot of fun because you will dance with experienced dancers as well as meet new people to dance with. This is being promoted by the Y and will be one big fun party on a great floor!

First, the RSVP. All you need to do is email our member, Mick Pryor, who organized this special event: mpryor@dpgcpa.com and give him your name to add to the list if you think you might want to join in this novel, fun evening. So far 37 dancers have their name on the list!

The band will be our own, home grown but now known band, The Ones Improper.
The Ones were born out of Peter Clark’s Electric Camel Contra dances and workshops and have been playing together for several years now for both English country and contra dances as far away as Roanoke, Virginia. This multi-instrumented group of experienced musicians plays a variety of tunes of traditional, Celtic and French Canadian origin featuring the hammered dulcimer and bodhran as well as many other instruments traditionally used in this high energy contra dance music!

Our caller, Nick Boulet, has much experience helping new dancers get started as well as teaching and calling some more challenging dances. You will feel welcomed and appreciated in his presence.

A short orientation lesson will begin at 7pm then the dancing begins, running until about 9pm.

SPECIAL! Blazer & Spero with Andrea Nettleton

Now the big reveal about some of our best out of state talent of the year!! This is a special event you don’t want to miss!

On October 10 at Clemmons Civic Club we will have the privilege of hosting “Blazer & Spero”, a collaboration of two amazing musicians from two well known and in demand bands, The Synchopaths and Lift Ticket!

Jeff Spero writes dances and is a musician in The Syncopaths, probably the foremost contra band on the West Coast. They have played SDR and Gypsy Meltdown in recent years.

People who regularly go to dance weekends know Rex Blazer who was the fiddler for Lift Ticket when they were the featured band at Feet Retreat about 10 years ago, and he has played at numerous festivals for years. Lift Ticket was one of the featured bands at Warren and Terry Doyle’s sold out Contradance Winter Holiday event in December of 2016, and they were very well received!

And to top off this very special evening we have one of the region’s well known and experienced callers, Andrea Nettleton of Atlanta, who has called our dance at least twice in recent years and called at Splashdance 2016.

Please help support this special event and high quality talent by making an extra donation this time if you can. A suggested regular admission to this dance of $10 and full time students at $6 will help defray the extra costs. And, be sure to let your friends and others know about this event so they can enjoy it with you!. Your first time dancer guests will be admitted FREE! Thanks!

Reel Shady with Dean Snipes calling

If you missed going to Feet Retreat for any reason, you’ll be glad to at last get back on the dance floor this Tuesday, September 19 at the Clemmons Civic Club, the place of friendly dancers!  And if you enjoyed Feet Retreat but are now coming off the high, re-energize here at your local dance where new people need you to help them get started and where the dancing is always fun and often hilarious.

We’ll thrill to the sounds of the well known regional band, Reel Shady as they provide their own energetic interpretation of Scottish, Celtic and traditional tunes!  Reel Shady has been providing listeners with this finely detailed, tight sound at venues in the area’s venues for many years, adding fresh new interpretations at each dance!  They blend their many talents, experience and instruments in a way that makes dancing to the music easy and fun.

Also, to add to the evening’s fun, is a caller we all love, Dean Snipes, the original “mighty fine” caller who engages us with his humor and wit as he clearly teaches the lesson and calls the dances. Spontaneous hilarity breaks out at times as Dean corrals we  sometimes inattentive dancers as we socialize and talk. It is humorous when we accidentally mess up during the dance and Dean has to get us back in line. That’s why contra is some much fun – its something we can do and not have to worry about doing right, enjoying  the freedom to make mistakes, knowing that no one cares!
