Contra Dance Clemmons – New Caledonia and Greg Frock

New Caledonia is an infrequent but vintage contra dance band dating from the 80’s! Many of the long time dancers will remember Janet and her band, Caledonia from the old days. They were one of the first nationally touring contra bands back in the day! Now they both play with various combinations – Janet around Charlottesville and DC, Laura around Asheville, NC, and with various partners in different parts of the country with the Avant Gardeners or Frequent Flyers. Their style is deeply rooted in the New England contra music, but with excursions into funkier areas of salsa, old time, and modern compositions. They will be joined by a stellar west coast Mando/guitarist, Emil Olguin, a mainstay in the contra scene on the west coast – Emil is based in LA.
Website – theavantgardeners.com or Lauralight.com.
Our Caller will be Greg Frock from Maryland.

Contra Dance Clemmons – George Paul and Karina Wilson – Caller Nick Boulet

(scroll to the bottom of this page for a complete poster for this dance!)
Violinist, fiddler, songwriter, and composer, Santa Fe native Karina Wilson has been performing with artists and touring acts on the national and international scene since 2005 around the US and Ireland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Poland. She has composed and performed original music for the ARCOS Dance touring show “Warriors”, as well as the NMSA and SFUAD original production of “woman’s voices”, and the Santa Fe Playhouse “Santa Fe fiesta melodrama” and has been featured on numerous recordings throughout the United States and Ireland.

In addition to touring nationally with acclaimed tune writer Larry Unger, she is an active member of numerous local Santa Fe bands as well as leading her own projects: The Katydids, Karina and Pete, and the Karina Wilson Trio- a performance art group, and runs a private violin/viola studio.

Strongly influenced by traditional American music styles (like southern Appalachian old time, Northern New England, French Canadian Québécois, Texas swing, honky tonk, Cajun, American folk and rock n roll.) With elements of world music traditions (Irish, Scottish, English country dance/early music, west African Susu music and dance, and Zimbabwean mbira). She is finding a way of stitching the old traditions together and bringing them back out into the current soundscape.

Caller will be Nick Boulet who always has fun dances for us!

Contra Dance Guilford Grange Greensboro – Steamshovel (Roger Gold and David White)/Caller George Segebade

(See a poster of this event at the bottom of  the page!)
We welcome the band, Steamshovel, which includes David White and Roger Gold. They play their instruments with the potential of the early steam shovels of the mid-1800s.

Both musicians have been playing for contra dances and with several other groups for years. They also compose music and sometimes add vocals to their repertoire. Their dance tunes include selections from the old-time repertoire tinged with Celtic influences and beautiful waltzes.

Gold’s proficiency on the guitar is extensive, ranging from Celtic and jazz styles to intricate melodic playing. He accentuates the sounds with the foot drum. He plays with the highly band The Elftones

White plays fiddle and banjo in the Appalachian old-time style. He lends his groovy, driving and “flowy” fiddling to the Redbud Ramblers.

We are always happy to have George Segebade calling the dances!
